NeoCR equation recognition
NeoCR

NeoCR

Recognize equations in images and on screen, on your own computer, and know when to use an external provider.

On this page

NeoCR turns the image of an equation (a screenshot, a photo, a scanned PDF) into editable LaTeX in NeoMath. By default it runs entirely on your computer: no image leaves the machine.

Capture from the screen#

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+A or click the OCR button at the right end of the toolbar.
  2. The screen dims on every monitor. Draw a rectangle around the equation.
  3. Adjust the selection with the 8 handles on the edges and corners, drag to move, or use the arrows (1 px; with Shift, 10 px).
  4. Click Recognize, press Enter or double-click inside the selection.
  5. The equation opens in the editor, ready for review.

New selection starts over; Esc cancels; right-click undoes the selection.

Recognize a copied image#

Copy the image (from a PDF, the browser, an e-mail) and press Ctrl+Shift+V.

Providers#

Choose in Settings › Recognition:

Provider Where it runs What it needs
NeoCR (default) on the computer nothing; it comes with the app
SimpleTex online service token from your SimpleTex account
Mathpix online service App ID and App Key from your Mathpix account
Local server pix2tex server on your network address (default http://127.0.0.1:8502/predict/)

With an online provider, only the image you selected is sent. In the same settings you choose whether to review the result before inserting and whether the image should be prepared (crop and contrast) before recognition. The history keeps the last 20 recognitions.

Step by step#

  1. Capture: of the whole desktop, with multiple monitors, on Windows, Linux (X11 and Wayland) and macOS.
  2. Recognition: NeoCR reads the equation and delivers the LaTeX.
  3. Review: the result opens in the editor for you to check and insert.

In automation#

  • NeoScript: neo.ocr.reconhecer(imagem) returns the LaTeX; neo.ocr.inserir(imagem) inserts it in the tab. App only.
  • Local HTTP API: POST /v1/ocr with the image (PNG, JPEG, BMP, WebP or GIF) returns LaTeX and MathML. Only on the app’s server (NeoMath --servidor).
  • InDesign: the plugin replaces a selected image with the recognized equation.
