Microsoft Word
Use NeoMath and NeoChem in Word through the NeoMath tab on Windows, the Office add-in on Mac and the web, and the direct send shortcuts from the app.
On this page
There are three ways to work with Word, and they coexist:
| Way | Where | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| NeoMath tab on the ribbon | Word for Windows | create, edit, number and convert equations and structures without leaving Word |
| Direct send from the app | NeoMath and NeoChem on Windows | send the open equation to the Word cursor with a shortcut |
| Office add-in (side panel) | Word for Mac and Word on the web | insert, update and convert equations from the panel |
NeoMath tab (Windows)#
The tab is installed with NeoMath. Each button opens the right app and returns the result to the document when you save.
| Group | Button | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Equation | New equation | opens NeoMath; when you save (Ctrl+S), the equation enters the document |
| Equation | Edit equation | opens the selected equation in NeoMath; when you save, it is replaced in place |
| Equation | Numbered | new display equation, numbered on the right |
| Equation | Insert as | Word equation, SVG image or PNG image (300 dpi); inline, display, numbered on the right or on the left |
| Chemistry | New structure / Edit structure | the same with NeoChem, for structures and reactions |
| Document | Export all | saves every equation of the document to a folder (EPS, SVG or PNG, plus MathML) |
| Document | $…$ to equations | turns every $…$ and $$…$$ into an equation |
| Document | Equations to LaTeX | turns Word equations into LaTeX text between $…$ |
| Document | Update numbering | recalculates equation numbers and references |
| Convert | All to Word / SVG / PNG equations | converts every equation in the document |
| Convert | Apply current style to images | redraws NeoMath images with the preference chosen in NeoMath |
| Programs | Open NeoMath, Open NeoChem, Help | shortcuts to the apps |
Formats in the document#
- Word equation (OMML): native, also editable in Word.
- SVG image: vector; reopens in NeoMath to edit.
- PNG image: 300 dpi.
Numbered equations use SEQ fields and bookmarks, so cross-references and Update fields work.
Direct send from the app#
With Word open on Windows, in NeoMath:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+Enter | sends the equation to the Word cursor |
| Ctrl+Shift+Enter | updates the selected equation in Word |
| Ctrl+Shift+W | brings the equation selected in Word into NeoMath |
All three are in the shortcut profile and can be changed in atalhos.json. The editor’s context menu also has Send to Word.
From the command line#
neomath word inserir equacao.tex --modo nativa
neomath word inserir - --bloco --numerada direita
neomath word equacoes
neomath word exportar
neomath word converter-tex
neomath word atualizar-numerosneomath word with no action shows help. --abrir starts Word if none is open.
Office add-in (Mac and web)#
The add-in is a side panel that inserts, updates and converts equations. LaTeX and MathML to Word equation translation gives the same result as the app.
- Each equation lives in a content control tagged
neomath:<id>. - Bring selected recovers exactly what was typed, including
\ce{}, and Update selected swaps the content without losing the control. - The panel follows the Office theme (light or dark) and has chemistry shortcuts (
\ce,\ox,\pu,\enthalpy).
Load in Word on the web#
- Get from Neo the address of the add-in hosted over HTTPS and the
manifest.xmlfile. - In Word on the web, open Insert › Add-ins › Upload My Add-in.
- Choose
manifest.xml. The NeoMath panel appears on the ribbon.
In companies and schools, the Microsoft 365 administrator can distribute the add-in to everyone through the admin center.
NeoChem in Word#
NeoChem has its own bridge with Word: structures and reactions go in as SVG or PNG and reopen in NeoChem with the Edit structure button.
